Review: Sunny Choice

Happy Vesak Day! Today was a pretty good day.

In the morning I watched Earthlings with my mum (will blog about that again in future) and I think she's now more open to the idea of eating vegan. Then we went to shop for a bit before meeting my dad and going to the far far away Bukit Batok specially to eat at Sunny Choice. When I first found out about Sunny Choice through my dad, I didn't think much of it as I judged it by it's rather (no offence) mediocre website. However, after reading many good reviews about the place from other bloggers such as Eat Green CakeMr and Mrs Vegan and Hungry Ang Mo, and seeing how they have a 90% rating on hungrygowhere, I decided I had to give it a try.

Sunny Choice serves healthy vegetarian food (though I think its vegan since I saw no dairy or egg) and is a cafe cum health store!

You place your order on a tablet which is pretty cool.

So here's what we ordered. Curry brown rice set, Tau hu goreng, Nasi Lemak set and Veggie sushi rolls!

Best veggie sushi rolls EVER. What do they put in there? It tastes amazing. The sauce on the side makes them even better. I don't like wasabi but the sauce just had hints of it and ended up complementing the nori rolls perfectly. They also wrapped the rolls really compact and neatly --- did not fall apart even when poked into with a fork, due to the lack of chopsticks.

This was my meal. It was only $7.50 but boy was it filling! I couldn't finish the rice. The curry is absolutely delicious though it could be spicier. Loved the carrot and vegetables in there heh. The set came with a piece of mock meat, greens, a mini salad and some pumpkin (?) chips. I really liked the salad with the carrot strips. It has a slightly sour but appealing taste! Like vinegar-ish? Not a huge fan of the mock meat slab. It tastes nice but the texture isn't too great and I found it rather rubbery. I don't exactly like mock meat in general. I don't think when you stop eating meat, you shouldn't focus on pretending to eat meat but rather eating more plants! The chips were supposed to be really good (from the other reviews) but to me, they were nothing out of the ordinary.

Tau hu goreng. Much less oily than the usual deep fried tofu! Topped with pumpkin sauce. Can't say much as I only tried a little along with my main dish, and couldn't really taste it :( Supposed to be good though.

Dad digging into his nasi lemak with mock ikan bilis! I think they're deep fried vegetable strips? This is supposed to be good as well!

After the meal I browsed around the shop and bought some more organic spelt flour, because I'm running short at home.

SO OVERALL,
I'm really glad I tried Sunny Choice! It completely deserves that 90% rating on hungrygowhere. It exceeded my expectations because I was "judging a book by its cover" and thought the food would just be "okay". Most vegan restaurants serve westernized food but Sunny Choice makes local food vegan/vegetarian, while giving you the satisfaction that you'd get with the hawker centre version. Sunny Choice is also very affordable compared to places like The Living Cafe and average cost per person is <$10! Not only that the portions are ultra generous. We ordered the regular size for everything, I don't know who could even eat the upsized version! My parents and I left Sunny Choice with full and happy bellies, but not in the bloated greasy way. The cafe-store concept is pretty neat too, if you're keen on trying some moderately healthy and organic foods ^.^ What I don't like is that all the locations are in Bukit ___fill in the blank___, which is really out of the way :-(

Rating: Highly recommended 7/10
